Poker is a card game in which players wager money that their hand is better than those of their opponents. The highest hand wins the pot. Unlike other card games, in poker there are no bluffing or “tricks.” Typically the game is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. Some variant games use multiple packs or add wild cards (jokers, one-eyed jacks, etc.)
In most games, each player antes an amount of money (the exact amount varies by game). When betting begins the first player to act may call, raise or fold. He can also remain in the pot without betting until he has a showdown, at which time he must reveal his hand.
The best poker hands are Five of a Kind (Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and 10 of the same rank) or Straight Flush (five consecutive cards of the same suit). If two or more hands have four of a kind, the higher-ranking hand wins; if no one has a four of a kind, the highest card outside the four of a kind wins.
It is important to minimise losses from losing hands, and maximise winnings from good ones. This is called min-max strategy. Good players achieve this by observing and evaluating the play of others. The more they play and observe, the quicker their instincts develop. This helps them to extract the maximum value from their good hands and bluff successfully when they have bad ones.
